The weather was Hail...

Fortunately, no damage... but it was a little scary! Tracy grabbed the camera, and we got a couple minutes of video plus a few "after-the-fact" pictures.

Some more new Photos

Hmmm... seems I haven't been updating the site much. So, as I've said in the past, I will now be making an effort to update things more frequently. And, as has happened in the past, that will likely not come to pass ;)

Yep... I travelled back in time to post photos from the recent months.

Caribbean Cruise - July 2006

Just back from a Cruise to the Caribbean aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas. We had a wonderful time. As always, photos can be seen in the Gallery, and a full recap can be read here.

Sigh... everything changes eventually...

Well, for the past 8 years we've had this wonderful field out behind the house. The view looking out the kitchen window or from the back porch (while reading the paper on weekend mornings) has always felt a bit like we're living out in the country. Unfortunately, it seems the property has been sold and new homes will be built.

Nothing lasts forever, and we were sure lucky to have the field there for as long as we did. It will be a big change.

Don's work as a hobby...

Don has redesigned the website and officially taken over webmaster duties for the local Porsche club. We're getting a bit more involved in the club, and attending more events, but much more for the social aspect than the cars.

You can see what he has done with the site here.

Georgia Aquarium

We made our first visit to the new Georgia Aquarium - and it's very nice. Lots 'o fishes! The whale sharks are really quite impressive, and they're still young with much more growing to do. And the beluga whales are very entertaining.

We both liked the layout. Unlike many aquariums in which you pretty much follow a path from entrance to exit, the Georgia Aquarium is designed in a "hub-and-spoke" format. From the central "lobby" you have access to each of the five main areas, and it is easy to go back to a particular point of interest.

There are a few pictures in the Gallery, but not the best quality. The next time we go we'll take our "fancy" camera and see if we can't get some better shots.

Happy New Year!

Hmmm... I didn't do too well with "updating the site more frequently" this past year. Ah well, try try again and all that...

Not too much excitement around here this past year, but that's okay. Life is very pleasant, and sometimes the status-quo is a whole lot better than wild, chaotic events.

We had a nice vacation in the Bahamas; sold the Honda; and had a nice visit "up-north" with Don's family.

New Year's Eve was spent once again with our neighbors. Dinner out at Tomas and then back to our house to ring in the New Year. We are very fortunate to have such good friends right around the corner.

Tracy has become rather fascinated with Sudoku puzzles - and she's become very good at solving them. If you haven't tried them, you should. It's a great workout for the brain. If you're already a fan, a good place online is www.WebSudoku.com - be careful though... it can be addictive.

In store for 2006 is Tracy's 30-year High-School reunion, which she is looking forward to; we are trying to plan an Alaskan cruise; and we need to put a new roof on the house (what fun!).

All the best to one and all in 2006!

Narnia on the Silver Screen

I have such fond childhood memories of the Chronicles of Narnia series of books by C.S. Lewis. Disney has produced a movie based on The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe that really looks like it's going to be good. The trailers and the website look great. I'm looking forward to seeing it on the big screen (should probably re-read the book first, since it's been a while...) - Don

Visit back Home

We took a short trip up to Oak Park to visit Don's family, and had a very nice time.

Friday night we stayed at the Write Inn, in the heart of Oak Park. It's a very quaint hotel, converted from an old apartment building. Not exactly 4-star service, but the room was clean and comfortable, and you can't beat the location. It also features the oldest lift (that's an elevator, for you young'ens) in Oak Park - the kind where you have to manually slide the door open, and then slide another cage-style door open on the inside.

Saturday night we stayed with Dennis and Sue out in Aurora. Everyone came for dinner and surprise entertainment. We were treated to lovely music by both Sue and Anni on the violin, Liesel on the oboe, and a marvelous performance of Amazing Grace by the Magpipes... ya gotta hear it to believe it!

Sunday morning we lingered a little bit too long over breakfast and, due to a rather long security line at the airport, made our flight with only minutes to spare. Mental note for future visits: leave earlier for the airport.

Farewell, old friend - We hardly knew ye...

After many years of faithful service, we say good-bye to the Honda. Tracy bought it in the Spring of 1988, and 17 years and 93,500 miles later, we send it off to a new home.

We wish it the best of luck, and many more years rolling down the highways and byways of life!

Is it really Better in the Bahamas?

We’re back from a wonderful 5 days in the Bahamas, trying to answer that age old question. And I’m here to tell you that:

  • The coffee was a little Bitter in the Bahamas
  • We had pancakes for breakfast, and the cooks used a Beater in the Bahamas to mix the Batter in the Bahamas. The pancakes were served, of course, with Butter in the Bahamas
  • In the casino, we saw a Bettor in the Bahamas
  • At the straw market, one could Barter in the Bahamas
  • It’s said that a guy who got his mail-order bride from Freeport would say that he Bought-her in the Bahamas
At that point, Tracy groaned, said that was too much of a stretch, and told me to stop.

You can read about our trip here, and, as always, pictures are in the Gallery.

We've Moved!

Well, our website has moved - to a new server. You may notice a few minor changes, and a link or two may not function correctly. If you do get an error, feel free to drop us a note - we'll fix it ASAWGATI (As Soon As We Get Around To It).

With the move, we've also changed our Video Gallery - it now uses Flash FLV format video, along with a custom video player interface. Hope you like it!

Silly Nieces...

Mike, Robin, Liesel and Anni stopped by for a quick visit - twice. They were on their way to and from a Land/Sea Disney vacation. Four days at the parks, and then 3 nights on a Disney cruise.

It was great to see them all. The girls are absolute angels! And, if you haven't had the opportunity yet, get together with them and request a performance by the "Von Magnusson Family Singers" ... it's a real treat.

In case anyone is keeping track: the "stinky old boot" has made its way back to its place of origin...

Tracy's England Trip

Tracy had a great time in England. Steve's birthday party was a blast.

Baseldon was nice, although it seemed like "Anytown USA" with all the familiar fast-food and chain restaurants.

Three days in London was not quite enough time, although many sites were seen. Naturally, the "London Eye" was closed for maintenance!

Photos are available in the gallery.

Oh yeah... Tracy Loves Bungie!!!!

Happy New Year!

Well, another year has come and gone... Time sure flies when you're ... well, actually time just flies.

A few big events this past year. Our 10th anniversary. Tracy's first trip to Vegas. Our first trip to Hawaii. Don shaved his mustache for the first time in 25 years. Karen and Mike got engaged and married.

Tracy has also adopted a bunch of feral (wild) cats that live behind her office. She feeds, shelters and loves them. Over the past few months she has caught 4 (or maybe 5 or even 6?) of them and taken them to a vet for testing, innoculations and spay/neutering. There are several more that need to be caught and treated, at which point they will (hopefully) stop reproducing.

We are looking forward to 2005 and all that it might bring. First up: Tracy is headed over to London in a couple weeks with her friend Jane, with whom she spent a summer in France about 25 years ago. That's when and where they met Steve who is having a 50th birthday bash, which is the reason for the trip (in case anyone's wondering why London in January).

As always, at this time of year, I am planning to update the website more frequently. And, as always, that will remain to be seen.

So, Happy New Year, and may 2005 bestow joy and wonder on you all!

Congratulations Karen and Mike!

Congratulations to the new Mr & Mrs Wilson!

Karen and Mike got married on October 2nd, 2004 at Norcross First United Methodist Church. It was a lovely ceremony, followed by a fun reception at Rivermont Country Club.

Don had volunteered to handle the photography for the wedding, and was lucky to find two additional photographers to help out. Special thanks to Tim Skrastins of Image Factory Photography and to George Butler for the generous contribution of their time and talents.

After a week of recovery, the couple will be headed off to a honeymoon cruise in the Carribbean.

Video on the Web

As you may have already noticed, I finally got around to adding some video clips in the Gallery section. To view the clips, you need software capable of viewing Microsoft WindowsMedia format streaming video (if you have a Windows system, you almost certainly have it already).

If you've looked at the photos on our site in the past, you might notice a little change there too. We've started adding captions to the pictures (please, no complaints about any inaccuracies). Also, clicking on any thumbnail image will automatically load the picture in slide-show mode. You can then click next or previous links to move through the pictures, or click the link for "Auto Play"

There are links on the main Gallery page for tips on viewing the photos and videos.

An Engagement!

Wow! Tracy's sister Karen is engaged! She has been seeing Mike Wilson for some time now, and we all think he is a great guy. They were down in Panama City Beach for the weekend, he popped the question at sunset out on the balcony, and she said yes!

We're thrilled for the both of them, and are looking forward to the wedding. And of course, Tracy is looking forward to helping to plan the wedding.

Congrats to Karen and Mike!

Las Vegas Vacation

Well, we just returned from a planned trip to Las Vegas... but, as they say: "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!" so, we cannot tell you anything about the trip. In fact, we can not even confirm that we actually went there....

Heh, heh, heh...

Just kidding - a full description of our trip can be found here...

Happy Anniversary to Us!

Today is the tenth anniversary of the marriage of Don and Tracy Magnusson! It has been a spectacular 10 years, and, as Don likes to say, we're still on our honeymoon!

A special thank-you from Don to Tracy, for the best 10 years of his life!

A Christmas Surprise!

As many know, Don's family has gotten a little spread out. Pat and her 2 kids live in Anchorage, Alaska; Eric and Vicki and their kids are in Milwuakee; Mom, Dad, Tami, Rebecca, Mike, Robin, Liesel, Anni, Sue and Dennis are in the Chicago area; and of course we're here in Atlanta. As one might imagine, it is not common that we all manage to get together.

Well, Pat and kids were headed to Oak Park to visit Mom and Dad for the holidays. So Eric managed to get a day off of work, and everyone planned to be together on Friday evening for an early Christmas celebration... everyone except us, that is. Don told his mom that with the holidays, parties (including the all-important dinner for Tracy's office), and the somewhat short notice, we would not be able to make it. This was a bit of a ruse!

We sent a box of presents for all the kids to open, along with a note with our regrets. Without letting anyone know, we then hopped a flight to Chicago on Friday afternoon. After arriving at the airport, we grabbed a rental car, checked in to a hotel, and then headed over to the folks house. Hoping we'd be the last to arrive, we pulled up to the house and saw that everyone else's cars were parked out front. Don had told his mom that we'd be calling to say hello to everybody, so we took out the cell phone and dialed.

Don's mom answered, and after a quick hello and Merry Christmas said "we're just sitting down to eat, can you call back in a little while"? This was going to work out just fine. As we walked up the steps to the house, Don replied "we're on our way out, so maybe we can just say hello quick." So Mom said she'd try to put the call on speaker phone. Fortunately, the front door was unlocked, so as she was doing that we let ourselves in.

Everyone was in either the dining room or kitchen, so we were not immediately noticed. As we entered the room, Mom's back was to us and Don says (still into the phone) "wow Mom, this connection is great! It sounds like I'm right in the room behind you." She said she was still trying to get the speaker phone to work. By now we're starting to get some response from the people who could see us, and Mom turned around to see that she no longer needed to fuss with the phone.

It was a great evening, and we'll know soon if any of the attempts at group photos turned out at all. Unfortunately, Tracy's office party was the following night, so we had to hop another flight back Saturday morning. A short trip, but well worth it!

Mannheim Steamroller

We went to the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas concert on the 13th. You may not know who they are, but you've almost certainly heard them. Very bold, exciting music. The Atlanta newspaper did a good job of describing it as "18th century rock-and-roll." We got seats at a table in the center of the arena floor, which was very nice. It included a couple beverages and a nice fruit and cheese platter. We have a couple of their CDs, and the live performance did not disappoint.

Swedish Visitors

Don's cousins from Sweden, Torsten and Birgit, visited us for a couple days. Actually, Torsten is Don's Mom's first cousin, so I guess that makes him Don's second cousin (but who's counting?).

It was very nice having them visit. We caught them at the end of their trip - Chicago, Nashville, then us - and we felt very honored that they adjusted their travel plans to see us.

We spent a day out at Stone Mountain. As our luck goes, many of the attractions were closed, as this was a weekday in the off-season. Also, the tram to the top of the mountain was closed for maintenance... as it turned out, Torsten and Birgit preferred going up on foot. We made it to the top, although lagging slightly behind "Mr. Happy Feet" as Tracy liked to refer to Torsten.

All in all, it was wonderful seeing them. With some luck, we'll be able to travel over to see them in Sweden some time.

California Trip

We had a nice trip out to California in August. Short, just a Thursday thru Sunday. Flying on JetBlue was nice! Leather seats, personal DirectTV, good service... and on time (actually arrived in Long Beach about 30 minutes early)!

After arriving we picked up the rental car and dropped in for dinner with Tim Ryan and family (from Don's old diving days). We got to meet Tim and Val's son Connor, who will be turning 2 soon. They have always made us feel so welcome when we visit, and this time was no exception. We're trying to get them to come visit Atlanta so we can return the favor.

After dinner we drove down to Vista to spend a couple days with Larry and Dana True and their girls. Kara and Kelsey started high-school this year, and Kaitlyn is just cute as a button! And all three girls are just angels... never give Mom and Dad an ounce of trouble... they're like perfect children!

Tracy and Dana went to lunch and shopping on Friday, and Don went to Disneyland. Another old friend of his lives in Orange County, and his fiancee works in retail out at the park. So, what better place to tag up and grab some lunch?

Saturday was another shopping day, but this time for Larry and Don. It seems Don has started a habit of talking people into buying new computers :) Well, it's more a case of his being more than happy to give advice when requested.

Saturday evening cookout, and we were entertained by cheerleading and clogging shows from the girls.

Up early Sunday morning and off to the airport to return home. Tracy's Mom took care of the dogs while we were away, as she frequently does (oh do we miss them when we're gone). Thanks Mom!

All in all, it was a very nice weekend. As usual, pics are in the Gallery.

Recommended Reading Continued...

Well, I've finished book 10 of the 12-book Left Behind series. Unfortunately, book 11 is not out in paperback yet. The local library has 111 copies of it, but they are all out with 123 people on the waiting list.

And, book 12 - the conclusion - won't even be out in hardcover till next Spring. I may just have to fire up the ol' Time Machine and go get an "advance" copy...

As you may guess, by the rapid pace at which I read the first 10 books, I still recommend them.

Tree-Be-Gone!

With all of the severe weather we've been having, many trees around the area are falling down or splitting. In particular, the Bradford Pears are making a mess.

Fortunately, our tree was still in good shape, but we decided to get a little proactive (ooooh, big word!) and had it taken down. You can see before and after pics in the June - August 2003 section of the Gallery.

Recommended Reading

Don has started in on the Left Behind series of books. If you're not familiar with them (although it seems that everyone is) it is a fictional account of the Rapture and Tribulation.

So far (I'm on the 5th book of the series of 12) I've found it to be very engaging. It is easy reading, and the story moves along at a nice pace. And the authors get across the (important!) message of the story, without it feeling like a lecture.

I highly recommend this series of books.

Happy Summer!

Hope everyone is enjoying their summer. We sure are. Typical Atlanta summer weather: hot, humid, hot, humid... almost daily thunderstorms.

We have a weekend trip planned in August to visit Dana and Larry and their girls in San Diego. We're flying on JetBlue... a relatively new airline that flies nonstop from Atlanta to Long Beach. By most accounts, it's a good airline to fly - all leather seats, wider seats than most airlines, DirectTV in every seat. Might turn out to be an enjoyable flight.

Some New Pics in the Gallery

Added a few pictures in the Gallery section. Keffie and Wilson got new haircuts... We had the groomer give them nice, short, summer cuts. Probably the last time we do that! I imagine it feels a bit cooler to them, but they sure look funny.

Short trip to Biloxi

We just returned from a quick trip to Biloxi, Mississippi, where we stayed at the Beau Rivage Hotel. Had a very nice time. Hung out at the pool... gambled a little... Also saw a very entertaining show called BALAGAN. It is a Russian "Theatrical Circus" - much in the style of Cirque du Soleil.

Sunday, March 16, 2003
Cirque du Soleil

Went to see the latest Cirque du Soleil show - VAREKAI - today. We've now seen 7 of their shows (actually, Don also saw Mystere in Las Vegas). As each new show has come to Atlanta, we felt they never quite measured up to the first one we saw - till now. And most folks we talk to agree that VAREKAI is one of the best.

One of the ticket options includes a "VIP" package, so we gave that a try. It was nice... an hour prior to the show in the Tapis Rouge tent, including beverages and finger-foods. Plus the same during intermission. Probably the best part of it is the VIP restrooms - no lines! The VIP package is a little expensive though, so it's unlikely we'll go that route again.

Vacation!

We're off to Grand Cayman for a much needed vacation! When we get back we'll be posting lots more pics from Sue's wedding, as well as pictures and details about our trip.

And it is entirely possible that we'll actually update this web site in a timely manner :)

Sue got Married!

Well, Sue and Dennis were married today. She is now officially Susan Hooker. The wedding was very nice, and Sue made a beautiful bride (of course, there was no doubt that she would). It was great seeing everyone over the weekend. The first set of pictures (from Pat) are posted in the gallery section.

DonAndTracy.net back on-line and better than ever!

Yeah, yeah, I know... pretty weak. Launch the site, then have it unavailable for a couple weeks. However, we're now on a full T1 connection, so images should show up considerably faster (assuming you're on a broadband connection).

DonAndTracy.net goes live!

Norcross, GA. For immediate release - With much celebration and fanfare, Don and Tracy Magnusson announced today the launch of their new website, DonAndTracy.net

"We're very excited about all of this," said Magnusson, founder and CEO. "This new site will open up a whole new world of possibilities."

"Our first round of funding went very well, and we're anticipating the IPO to be issued in the fourth quarter of this year."

Asked about the keys to the successful launch; "It's all in our philosophy. We're all working toward the same goal," Magnusson replied. "It's a real family atmosphere."

He was reluctant to provide details of where the site will be going in the future, other than to say that it will be "surprising and exciting. We expect our visitors will return often to keep up with the latest developments."

Welcome

We're in the midst of a lovely Atlanta summer at present - one day it's too hot to go outside, the next day just delightful. Our yard is lush and green, thankfully with very little water, since we are experiencing the third year of a drought. When we first bought this house the extensive garden in the backyard was not a selling point to us (we're not yard people). Over the years we've come to appreciate and truly enjoy how beautiful it is. The previous owners did a wonderful job of planting perennials (or is it annuals?) and various other horticultural wonders. Our yard is actually rigged to have something always in bloom, so thank you to the previous owners for our lovely backyard year after year (Tracy, on the other hand, takes credit (deservedly) for the interior beauty of the house).

We do not currently have a big trips planned. Tracy had a wonderful trip planned to England with her friend Jane, but unfortunately the trip was canceled. Hopefully it will be rescheduled in October. Part of the England trip was to visit with a friend, Steve, whose acquaintance we made back in the summer of 1979 when Tracy and Jane were camping in the south of France. Tracy has enjoyed keeping in contact with Steve and his family ever since, so hopefully they will get to go visit them.

We are also looking forward to a trip in September to Chicago for the wedding of Don's sister Sue and her fiancé Dennis Hooker - yes, Sue's going to be a hooker (couldn't resist that one, and won't be able to resist it numerous times in the future). They're very excited and we're very happy for them. They have a honeymoon trip planned for Tahiti. We can't wait to hear how it was.

We were in Chicago in April to visit the family, and also to get together with 9 of Don's elementary school classmates. It was so much fun for both of us. You can see pictures here. It's been almost 30 years since they had seen each other. It was a very impromptu reunion but hopefully another reunion will be coming up soon with more of the 32 classmates in attendance.

Many of our close friends are on vacation now. Jane and Woody are in Alaska for a week of sightseeing by motor home, and a week of fishing. They went last year and enjoyed it so much they're going again. Dana and Larry and their girls are doing the motor home trip to the Grand Canyon from their home in southern California. Don's folks (plus Tami and Rebecca of course) just finished a week in Orlando and the surrounding area. They stopped here on the way back to Oak Park, and we had a couple very nice days together. We look forward to hearing all about everyone's vacation, and seeing pictures.

We just had a visit from Tracy's Aunt Drue (from Boise Idaho) and her newlywed husband Uncle Bill. They were here almost ten days, and Tracy's mom and sister got a month's worth of work out of Uncle Bill. He can do anything around the house and apparently enjoys doing it. It's always so nice to see them, it's unfortunate we all live so far away.

Don has just recently decided on a new hobby. He just bought a Zagi remote control airplane. We were recently at a friend's party in a neighborhood with a private airstrip. Those folks that did not own and fly real airplanes came out with the remote control versions and Don was intrigued. He seems to be a natural at flying it. He could probably fly a real airplane with all his experience at flight simulators. Anyway, we have that nice big open field behind our house, so he has the perfect place to play with his new toy. There've been a few rough landings, but the plane is still flying.

Can you believe I've waited this long to mention are sweet puppies? OK, they aren't puppies anymore. Keffie and little Wilson are just as cute and sweet as ever. We enjoy them so much it's almost to the point that we don't like to leave home without them. Keffie is the ultimate lap dog - she can't resist curling up in your lap and licking your face. Wilson, on the other hand, is more independent. Yet he follows us both from room to room. He has to be where he can see us. He's a funny little guy! We hope he is finally over his "chew all wood and rugs in sight" phase and we can move on to the "repair Wilson's damage" phase.

Work is going well for both of us. Don seems to always be busy and we're very thankful that he enjoys it.

Tracy just passed a milestone. This June was the twenty year anniversary of graduating from Armstrong State College in Savannah. Twenty years as a dental hygienist; eighteen and a half years with J.B. Moreland DDS. It's hard to believe so much time has passed. Fortunately she enjoys her work too. All the patients are her friends by now, so it's really just a day of socializing and getting paid.
